The discomfort caused by hemorrhoids can range from mildly annoying to excruciatingly painful. For those who have large internal or external hemorrhoids, a combination of internal and external hemorrhoids, or painful hemorrhoids that have not responded to home remedies or less invasive procedures, such as ligation using rubber bands, a hemorrhoidectomy may be necessary to alleviate pain and other symptoms. A Hemorrhoidectomy is a surgical procedure for the removal of hemorrhoids, which is normally performed in a surgery center on an outpatient basis using local, spinal or general anesthesia.

This procedure generally takes approximately 1 to 1½ hours to perform and requires that the patient be positioned face down on an operating table, or positioned on their back with their legs held up in stirrups. The area is cleaned and then each hemorrhoid will be clamped and tied off to prevent bleeding before being surgically removed. There is more than one method of removal that can be employed during a hemorrhoidectomy, with newer methods such as ultrasonic scalpels, cautery pencils and laser hemorrhoidectomy surgery quickly growing in popularity. If conventional methods are used to remove hemorrhoids, sutures will be required; whereas, if these newer methods are used, sutures are not needed. Another new procedure is sometimes coupled with hemorrhoidectomies, where surgeons staple healthy tissue in the area over the wound where hemorrhoids have been removed. While this procedure, called a stapled hemorrhoidectomy, seems to ease and hasten recovery, there is some evidence that this procedure may increase the risk of future complications.

Upon completion of the hemorrhoidectomy, patients are able to be driven home once the anesthesia has worn off and it is clear that any swelling in the area is not prohibiting urination. It is very common to experience pain during hemorrhoidectomy recovery, and most patients will be prescribed pain medication to assist with this. Pain medications that contain codeine may cause constipation, which can increase pain and discomfort during recovery; therefore, if constipation occurs, patients should alert their physician. Over the counter pain medications may also be recommended, as well as prescription or over the counter topical analgesic cream, gel or spray. Ice packs and frequents sitz baths, which are available as a sitz bath kit, help many patients manage pain and swelling during recovery, and high fiber foods and stool softeners are generally recommended for the first few weeks after surgery. Some bleeding is normal, particularly during the first few bowel movements after a hemorrhoidectomy; however, excessive bleeding should be reported right away.

After having a hemorrhoidectomy for the removal of hemorrhoids, patients can expect the recovery period to last at least two to three weeks and to have one or two follow-up appointments with their physician during this time. As patients recover from their hemorrhoidectomies, this is a good time to begin to plan and implement dietary and lifestyle changes to lower the chance of hemorrhoids returning in the future.

Enema Equipment

The enema bag is an essential part of the enema kit. Its purpose is to hold the water or solution as well as administer it. The enema bag will generally have a hook on one end to hang it as well as a hose on the other end. Enema bags come in many different sizes and varieties. The height above the ground at which the enema bag is hung determines the pressure of the water or solution. A recommended starting height is 2-3 feet above the ground.

There are three general types of enema bags. The most commonly used is the closed rubber bag, which can also be used as a hot water bag and can be purchased at any local pharmacy. It is extremely durable and usually lasts a lifetime. The open bag or fountain is collapsible and is often used when people are traveling, but it is warned that the open design can lead to spillage. The disposable bag is found in hospitals but can be purchased at most pharmacies. Some people prefer these bags because they are transparent allowing you to see the fluid level as it is being administered. Disposable bags are usually discarded after a few dozen uses.

Enema Nozzles and Clamps

The enema nozzle is another essential piece of enema equipment, as it is the part of the enema kit that is inserted into the rectum. There are many different kinds of enema nozzles on the market and some are specially made for people who have trouble with fissures and hemorrhoids. It is often recommended that a lubricant is used when inserting the nozzle, to prevent irritation and discomfort. When administering the water or fluid, the clamp on the nozzle helps control the flow.

Rubber Hose or Colon Tube

The enema tube is the device through which the contents of the enema bag are delivered to the colon through the rectum. Medium sized tubes are often recommended as smaller sizes can accidentally slide too deep inside the rectum.

Other Enema Accessories

An IV stand is sometimes used for home-administered enemas because of its ease of use. The hook on the enema bag can be attached to the IV stand and the height can be easily adjusted to control the rate of the fluid flow.

This usually implies colon hydrotherapy, often called colonic irrigation, which most commonly involves the process of using enemas to inject water and sometimes herbs or other liquids into the colon using specialized equipment. However if you are not comfortable having this procedure done by someone else there are a range of colonic cleansing products suitable for home use.

Why the Need for Colonic Cleansing?

The body comes in contact with many harmful toxins through our increasingly unhealthy diets as well as our polluted environments. The colon is the part of the large intestine responsible for storing waste, reabsorbing water and maintaining electrolyte and water balance. Because the colon is an organ that is directly or indirectly linked to virtually all other systems in the body, it is believed that through cleansing the colon, the entire body becomes healthier. Some people report improvements in their moods, energy levels and digestive motility after this treatment.

It is believed that cleansing the colon of harmful toxins and waste materials can help restore the body’s optimal pH balance, improve immune functioning, smooth the passage of nutrients into the blood, prevent further absorption of toxins and promote healthy digestion and excretion.

What Does Colonic Cleansing Involve?

Colonic cleansing is frequently administered professionally by trained colonic therapists using state-of-the-art equipment. During this process, the specialist instructs the patient to lie on a table while a machine or pump flushes up to 20 gallons of water through a tube inserted into the patient’s rectum. Once the water is in the patient’s colon, the specialist often massages the patient’s abdomen before flushing out the fluids and waste by way of another tube. This procedure is often repeated for up to an hour. Sometimes the water pressure and temperatures are varied and often the water is combined with herbs or enzymes intended to aid in effective cleansing and waste removal.

In addition to seeing a specialist, many people self-administer their colonic cleansing using products that can be purchased online or at local drugstores, pharmacies and supermarkets. These products can take the form of enemas, laxatives, herbal teas, enzymes, powders or capsules. All colonic cleansing products are intended to force the colon to expel its contents including built up waste matter and toxins.

What Are the Risks of Colonic Cleansing?

Some believe that colon cleansing can lead to dehydration, so it is important to stay well hydrated before and after the procedure. Others believe that the use of laxatives containing sodium phosphate is linked to a rise in electrolyte levels. This can be dangerous for people with heart disease or kidney disease, so it is recommended to check with a doctor before proceeding.

A fleet enema is a brand name for a saline laxative, used as an enema to help treat constipation. In any enema a device, usually an enema bag or smaller enema syringe containing liquid, is used to introduce liquid to the rectum and to differing degrees to the colon. There are several reasons for doing so, but a fleet enema is specifically used to help clear the bowel. Fleet enemas contain sodium phosphates as active ingredients. These are salts (different forms) of phosphoric acid. Sodium phosphates are also used in a range of food products and are generally considered safe for use in humans.

Saline laxatives work by holding water in your colon and preventing it from being absorbed. When they are given as an enema, as with a fleet enema, they cause a strong urge to evacuate the bowel and descending colon, and assist in this by hydrating any stools that were hard to pass.

Fleet enemas are most often used to treat constipation that has not been resolved by less invasive methods such as dietary and lifestyle changes, or fiber supplements. Although this treatment is available over the counter in many countries, it is always advisable to discuss your condition with your health care professional before taking any type of laxative.

Fleet enemas are also used in some cases to empty the bowel before a rectal examination or a surgical procedure.

In adults, the normal dosage for fleet enemas is 120mL, and in children half this amount. Children under 2 should not be given this medication unless on advice from a doctor. The enema is administered by inserting the tube into your anus while lying down on your left side, and squeezing the fleet enema bag so that the contents are introduced to your rectum. The nozzle can be removed, but you should remain lying down until you feel the urge to empty your bowel.

Because they contain phosphate salts, fleet enemas should not be used by people suffering from kidney disease, or anyone with imbalances of electrolytes or those on a low salt diet. You should consult your doctor if you have any other known health condition or unusual symptoms, to discuss whether this is the most suitable treatment for you. You should also discuss the suitability of this treatment with your doctor if you are pregnant or breast feeding.

As with any laxative, regular use can lead to dependence. Fleet enema should only be used when necessary and the directions on the product should be followed carefully.

In addition to the saline laxative, there is a mineral oil form of fleet enema. This is a lubricant laxative, which also helps you empty your bowel if you are suffering from constipation, without irritating your intestine.
